What Does God Look Like?

If God really does look like an old man, I hope he looks like Morgan Freeman

As promised, today I am pondering a truly universal size question: What does God look like?

It’s one of those immense concepts such as:

  • Where does the universe start?
  • Where does it end?
  • Heck, does it even have a beginning and end?

What does God look like? The more I think about it, the more I’m absolutely sure I will never (at least not in this earthly body) have a definitive answer.

For all my readers who liked the post about hard-boiled eggs, please hang in there! This is NOT a religious question. Whether you’re ChristianBuddhist or whatever–unless you absolutely believe there is no higher power responsible for us being here (and if that is the case, skip today’s post) you must have some conceptual image of God that works for you.

Soooo, wouldn’t it be interesting to know what other people think God looks like? To start the ball rolling, I’ll tell you what I think.

When I was young, God was the bearded old man sitting on the throne in the sky. Obviously, that image doesn’t cut it for me anymore. But that’s where the problem starts; I haven’t come up with an image to replace the old man. It’s kind of like I hinted at above, when I start to think of God even the term “God” feels inadequate to me. I know there is a higher power. I’ve felt that higher power at work in my life, but I’ve concluded that limited as I am by words and the constructs of my human imagination, there is no way I can know what God looks like. So I guess what I’m saying is, for me, God is faith – that’s all I have.

Okay, now it’s your turn. What does God look like, to you?

my (the 3 yr old daughter) was asked in her sunday school class: what does God sound like? her response? “Like my Daddy.” i don’t know if she had her daddy’s “God voice” in mind or what but i thought that was a beautiful, clever response. To me? He is unbelievably forgiving, patient and encouraging…

To Me, God is that brilliant, soft white light that doesn’t hurt your eyes, a rythmic breathing in and out, the most comforting warmth, the feeling of complete contentment, when in His presence, you feel that you are completely known, and accepted, and there is being in true one-ness, and utter stillness. Like an atom turned inside out.

You made my day Rebecca – that was beautiful! And sooooo true. I love the replies I received, each one unique and true for I think God allows us to see (and hear 🙂 him (her, it) in our own way.

Which falls in line with the belief that we are made in his image. Though image here means not what we look like physically, but spiritually. Not sure if that makes sense, but I do love your response!

God has different faces to me, sometimes he is the lion, sometimes my friend, sometimes father, bridegroom, warrior and still I recognize his voice of his love.
I like also the question, which color is God like.
